Our Work

From the ward at six in the morning to the gaps the NHS cannot fill. This is what Little Angels does, and why it matters.

On the Ward

A Day in the Ward

Six o'clock in the morning on a children's ward is never quiet. There is the low hum of monitoring equipment, the occasional soft alarm, and the sound of footsteps as the night shift hands over to the day. The nurse finishing her shift makes her last round before handing over, ensuring every child has something soft to hold before they settle. Little Angels has supplied several of those items, and she says the difference it makes is something she can see.

By mid-morning, the ward's play specialist is at work, preparing children for procedures, providing distraction during treatment, and running art projects using materials from a recent Little Angels delivery. Lunchtime is noisy and social. Children who can be up and about gather at the ward table, and for ten minutes it feels less like a hospital and more like a dining room. These moments are not incidental. They are part of what keeps children feeling like children, not just patients.

Filling the Gap

What the NHS Can't Provide

The NHS is one of the greatest achievements of British society. The gaps we describe here exist not because of failure, but because of the nature of the system: the NHS is funded for clinical care, not for everything that surrounds it. Play provision is one of the clearest examples. Most large children's hospitals have play specialists, but not all wards have the budget for good play facilities, and stock needs constant replenishing. Little Angels fills that gap, providing toys, games and sensory equipment that wards cannot always fund themselves.

Comfort items for families fall entirely outside NHS provision. Toiletries for a parent who stayed overnight unexpectedly, a comfortable pillow for someone sleeping in a chair. These things make an extended stay bearable rather than merely survivable. Sibling support is almost entirely absent from formal provision, despite the significant impact a child's hospitalisation can have on brothers and sisters. Little Angels is not a competitor to the NHS. We are partners, filling gaps with the generous support of the public.

Real Impact

The Difference Your Support Makes

It is one thing to be told that your donation makes a difference. It is another to see what that difference looks like. In one hospital in the north of England, a ward had virtually no sensory equipment, despite a play specialist requesting it for over two years. Little Angels responded within three weeks, supplying weighted lap pads, tactile tools and noise-reducing ear defenders. One child who had previously needed two nurses during a routine blood test was able to manage the same procedure calmly with just their weighted lap pad. That is a child in less fear, and a nurse freed to care for another.

In a small hospital in Wales, a family arrived in the middle of the night with nothing. A nurse was able to present their frightened four-year-old with a soft toy within minutes of arrival. The parents say watching their child reach for that toy is a moment they will not forget. In the Midlands, a teenage girl hospitalised for eleven weeks received books chosen specifically for her interests. Her mother told us that what mattered most was that someone had listened and responded.

Beyond the Ward

Research & Funding

Alongside our direct support work, Little Angels Research Fund contributes to the evidence base for children's wellbeing in healthcare settings. We believe that good research and direct action are two sides of the same commitment: to children who deserve better, and to families who need more than the system can currently provide.

By funding research into the impact of play, comfort and emotional support on children's health outcomes, we work to ensure that what Little Angels delivers today becomes the standard of care that every child receives tomorrow.
